Chapter 42: Elend was working on keeping the people in the city from freezing. Elend realized that Cett had been siding with them against Straff by putting himself in Luthadel. Elend and Hammond used a passwall to discreetly exit Luthadel. Elend then rode alone toward the koloss camp to meet with Jastes, attempting to convince him to withdraw the koloss before they lost control and attacked. Jastes argued that he could handle them. Elend stabbed Jastes and used him as a hostage to escape the human camp. Not wanting to risk his life for nothing, Elend set out to discover what was inside the pouches the koloss carried. He attacked and killed a small koloss, taking its sword and pouches, which turned out to contain currency.
