Chapter 25: Kelsier and Vin flared pewter and ran nonstop to the caves, hoping to arrive before the Valtroux garrison that was sent after the skaa army. The trip would usually take two week by canal, but with pewter dragging, it took them only 16 hours. Their army had managed to finish off the Holstep garrison, but the Valtroux garrison caught up and slaughtered them before Kelsier and Vin arrived. Vin stopped Kelsier from trying to save what remained of the army, and they continued on to the caves to check if any men had stayed behind. They found two thousand men at the caves and they lead them to leave. A general told Kelsier and Vin that Yeden decided to “test” the army by striking the Holstep garrison, which got himself killed at the end. Mennis, from Tresting’s plantation, was among those who had stayed behind. He tried to convince Kelsier to quit, arguing that the battle had already been the skaa’s greatest victory in decades.
